There has been a lot of progress in the past few years to stop the plastic pollution problem that has overtaken the planet, but one retailer is concerned that people have forgotten the importance of using reusable grocery bags.

“What I don’t want to happen is for people to view reusable bags as just another trend and then forget about it,” says a spokesman from MJH Innovations, an online retailer that sells earth-friendly products at reasonable prices, like the LAPopDesigns.com cute reusable grocery bags they sell on Amazon. “The plastic pollution problem we are experiencing now isn’t going away any time soon, and it will take everyone doing their part to modify their old habits to really get a handle on it.”

He’s talking about the recent revelations that have hit the world by storm about how plastic shopping bags are harming the environment. According to recent reports, only 1 percent of plastic bags are recycled because the cost of doing so is just too expensive. And that’s bad news for the environment because experts say that plastic bags take 15 to 1,000 years to decompose, depending on the bag.

“All those plastic bags end up in our oceans, landfills, or as litter in every city,” he says. “In fact, of the washed up debris littering our coastlines, a full 10 percent of that is made up of disposable plastic bags.”

But the problem goes deeper than the environment, according to experts. “All that plastic pollution is doing more than harming the environment,” he says. “It’s putting marine life at risk, too.”

Experts say there is a mass of plastic floating in the ocean that is the size of Texas. And what’s worse is that sea life, such as birds and turtles, think the floating plastic grocery bags are jellyfish so they swallow them and suffocate as a result. Experts believe that up to a million birds and thousands of sea turtles succumb to this fate every year.

Most people know that plastic grocery bags are made from petroleum, but they probably don’t understand just how much it takes to create them. “Almost 12 million barrels of oil is used every year to make the approximate 100 billion disposable plastic bags we use every year,” he says. “And the amount of petroleum that it takes to produce just 14 of those bags could drive a car for 1 mile.”

He says that while it was a hot topic for some time, he fears that consumers have forgotten the importance of using reusable shopping bags. “This is not a trend,” he says. “It’s a lifestyle change that everyone needs to make in order to protect the environment and save the marine life that is currently in crisis.
