WASHINGTON - November 10, 2021 - (Newswire.com)

David Steinman, the American economist who advised Ethiopia's democracy movement that overthrew the Tigrayan People's Liberation Front (TPLF) dictatorship in 2018, published an open letter today criticizing U.S. policy on Ethiopia. Read the full statement here.

The letter, addressed to U.S. Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa Jeffrey Feltman, comes as TPLF forces reportedly threaten Ethiopia's capital amid a yearlong insurrection. Ambassador Feltman recently visited Ethiopia to press its federal government to enter into a ceasefire, improve humanitarian relief for Tigray, and hold war criminals accountable.

Steinman, nominated for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize and the author of a historical novel about the TPLF, said, "Urgently, America should stand firmly with Ethiopia's government in return for fresh concessions on humanitarian access, human rights, and other issues. Treating Ethiopia's popular government and the forces trying to restore the TPLF dictatorship as morally equivalent expands the war. This is a fight for African freedom."

Kia's Q3 profit jumps 24.3% on hybrid, SUV sales growth

Kia has achieved solid earnings growth in the third quarter, supported by rising sales of hybrids, electric vehicles (EVs) and popular SUV models across major markets, the carmaker said Friday in a regulatory filing. The carmaker said its operating profit between July and September jumped 24.3 percent to 1.82 trillion won ($1.36 billion). Sales also increased 10.2 percent to 31.6 percent during the same period. The automaker's earnings growth was driven by its diversified electrification strategy, as it helped sustain growth despite weakening global auto demand, Kia said. Global vehicle sales rose 7.9 percent to 847,355 vehicles in the third quarter on balanced sales growth of its hybrids, EVs and SUV models. Kia's SUV lineup, including the Sportage, Carnival and newly introduced Telluride Hybrid, helped drive sales in the United States, where retail sales rose 7.8 percent to approximately 234,000 units. The Seoul AI Foundation has signed an agreement with the state-run Korea Institute for Robot Industry Advancement (KIRIA) to develop joint projects that combine artificial intelligence and robotics to address the city’s needs, the foundation said Friday.
